ilkwen

The ilkwen is a low-lying wetland plant that grows along the edge of water.1Flood season and fast-moving streams result in large buildups of ilkwen along the banks and around obstructions. Healthy ilkwen has a limey to dark green appearance, with fleshy triangular leaves. Despite resembling other vined plants, it does not climb; it roots itself to a riverbank and grows out into the water.

Despite its soft texture and ready supply, ilkwen rarely appears in the local cuisine. Its taste is extremely bitter, and its tendency to pick up impurities in its water source means that it must be sourced carefully.
